Spirituality Defined
Spirituality can be described by the premise that humanity and all of
creation are composed not only of matter and energy, but of something
immaterial, something invisible, something much grander and therefore
something that transcends our present knowledge and understanding.
Furthermore this “ethereal stuff” is all interconnected and related to
itself and everything in the cosmos in ways that ordinary human
consciousness cannot begin to understand.
In a nutshell, spirituality is about trying to understand an aspect
of reality beyond that which we can perceive with our senses, infer with
our instrumentation or know with our rational mind. It is really about a
personal intuitive understanding of the relationship of how our lives
fit into the greater scheme of the cosmos as contrasted with our
ordinary existence in it.
Religion is contrasted with spirituality as a set of principles
followed and practiced by a community of people. Often it is based on
adherence to a faith as set down by an authority figure who claims or
claimed ultimate and incontrovertible knowledge of the cosmos.
